"The More the Merrier"…."Super-sized"….."Upgrade"…."Get my Money’s worth"…"PIle it on"…"Greedy"…You recognize these words?
It has began to be human nature to want as much as possible. We live to acquire, to use, to devour, and later….usually regret.
I have been so engulfed lately with my Health (hence my Health Page on my blog site) …I’m not sure if it is some early 30-something thing I’m going through, or just paying more attention to the signs around me. The signs that tell you the do’s and don’ts of the road of life. I’m determined to be one of thoese 40-something guys that a guy 20 years younger will envy physically.
During lunch today, my regular lunch partner and I went to one of our fastly growing in popularity Sandwich Shops, Jason’s Deli. This place is awesome. I have even written a review on Yelp. At any rate, getting back to the story, Laura, my lunch buddy, ordered a bowl of soup. If you’ve ever been to this place, a bowl of soup is basically a 12" plowl (plate-bowl). It’s huge. Thinking back to our previous visit where she realized that ordering that size was a complete waste of money because she didn’t come close to finishing it.
She revised her order and changed her massive bowl to a more suitable ‘Cup’. My food came out…to which I also modified my intake from a whole sandwich (which last visit I too was unable to finish a whole sandwich..and said remaining half sandwich slowly hardened in my refrigerator and was only recently thrown out) to a Half Sandwich and salad. Feeling pretty good about ourselves we sat and waited for our re-sized meals to come.
When LG’s food came, what did the waitress bring her…you guessed it…the Bowl of Soup. Even though she was refunded by the manager the difference between the Bowl and the Cup, the soup still came in a Huge size. Now this mistake could have happened one of two ways….three actually
The restaurant is poorly organized and the preparer and server didn’t get the memo about the reorder
The Manager felt the change was made due to price and not due to a real desire for a smaller order
The Manager just felt like exercising some power and supersizing for free!
At any rate, when the soup came, LG said, "And they give me a Bowl anyway!" Now, this wasn’t a good "And they give me a Bowl anyway"…mroe like the confused version of the statement.
Even in trying to curve eating habits, spending habits, portion habits, we find temptation everywhere!…even when we request for it to not appear.
After a bit of stiring with the waiter that brought the Super Bowl…the statements stopped and the bowl stayed. Clearly not wanting the whole bowl, Laura began to eat…in the end, the dent in the bowl was equivalent to a mere cup.
The manager to whom the original order was placed, walked by inquiring about the quality of our meal…a good practice to all in ANY service industry reading this… He said, "We gave you the bowl"..and smiled. LG countered his statement with a ‘"Yeah..and…" but she was unable to finish her statement because the manager must have felt that after he acknowledged that she received the super bowl, that he was off the hook from hearing any other concerns about it…More is better right?!?!
More Love…Yes…..More Food..No.
Restaurants are trying to impress on their customers that their portions are the best bang for the customers buck…because most customers want the most for their dollar. Whether you immediatelypackge up half your meal and enjoy 2 meals for the price of one, usually one portion is far too much for the normal sized stomach to safely digest.
So, Mr. Manager, that thinks you’re doing us a favor and giving us more and more ounces of your free food….do us a favor..give us what we order..Maybe we don’t want to see that bowl of soup in the mirror for the next 10 years…Thank you…but NO Thank You. We have a script we are trying to stick to, and you have a position in the script to play…so play it…and stop expanding your role and in the process, our waistlines in the process.
